Our clinic offers a comprehensive sexual health package that provides the best possible private sexual health care. We also provide a swab test to check for any bacterial infections. As part of your screening, you will have an examination & consultation with an experienced sexual health professional. If you choose, you can receive a call as soon as your results are ready, as well as any prescriptions, treatments, or advice you may need.

When should I get tested?

You can have a sexual health screening any time you have concerns about your sexual health. In general, it is recommended that you get tested fully whenever you have a new sexual partner, if you have multiple partners, or have had sex with someone who has an STD or sexual health symptoms. If you are noticing any symptoms, please come in for a test as soon as possible to rule out infections or treat any existing conditions.

What the test includes

There are three components to the comprehensive sexual health screen: a blood test to check for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, & hepatitis C; a urine test for chlamydia & gonorrhoea; & a swab test to check for bacterial infections.

What to Expect

Step 1

Preparing for test

To prepare for the test, please ensure you arrive with a full bladder (holding urine for two hours prior to your appointment), & well-hydrated (to make blood sampling easier). For women, it is advised that you do not come in for your test during your menstrual period.

Step 2

During the test

You will have a consultation with the doctor or sexual health nurse to discuss your sexual history & any current symptoms or concerns. You will have a small sample of blood taken from your inner arm, & will provide a urine sample. For the cervical swab, a speculum is inserted into the vagina, & the swab taken with a cotton swab. This procedure can be uncomfortable but not be painful. Female doctors & nurses are always available on request.

What is normal vaginal discharge?

All women have some vaginal discharge which typically varies depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle. Healthy discharge is produced by the cervix (opening of the womb), & is usually most noticeable during ovulation. It is normal to have a clear or cloudy white discharge, which may appear yellowish when dry.

What are some symptoms of sexually transmitted infection that I should be aware of?

Different infections present with different symptoms, but in general, things to be aware of & which warrant a sexual health screen include abnormal vaginal discharge (yellow, green, or thick & white, with a foul or strong odour), penile discharge, abdominal pain, pain on urination (dysuria), rash, sores, or itching.

Can I get an infection through poor hygiene?

For women, no. In fact, some cases of bacterial vaginosis (BV) are caused by too much emphasis on cleanliness. The vagina cleans itself, & does not require any special soaps or creams.
