Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoea, or gonococcus. It is frequently asymptomatic (showing no symptoms), especially in women, which means that it may easily go undetected. It is the second most common STI in the UK, after chlamydia. Testing for the infection with our clinic means you will have fast results, & in-house treatment if required. It is always recommended that pregnant women are tested for the disease, as it can cause permanent blindness in newborns.

At the Harley Street Health Centre, testing options include our comprehensive sexual health package, individual testing for gonorrhoea, or in a package together with a chlamydia test.

Treatment for gonorrhoea is a simple & highly effective course of antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection can cause complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women, infertility, or ectopic pregnancy. In men, over the long term, gonorrhoea can affect the prostate.

If you have no symptoms and are testing for peace of mind, there is no consultation fee payable.

However, if you have any symptoms, please note that a consultation fee is payable of £85 with a specialist nurse or £175 with a GP. This is to ensure that you are testing for the appropriate infections at the right time and have access to the right treatment once testing is concluded.

When should I get tested?

It is recommended that you test for gonorrhoea any time you have had unprotected sex with a new partner, or with a partner who is also having unprotected sex with other partners. As the infection frequently will not show symptoms, it can be overlooked & lead to complications, so always be on the safe side & get tested any time you are uncertain.

What the test includes

The test can be slightly different for men & women; in women, a cervical swab or urine sample is taken. In men, a simple urine test will usually suffice, although a swab of penile discharge will also be taken if that is one of your symptoms.

Procedure

Step 1
Preparing for test
To receive the most accurate results, we suggest holding you for urine two hours before the time of your appointment.
Step 2
During the test

You will have a brief consultation with the doctor or the sexual health nurse to discuss your sexual history & any current symptoms or concerns. For the cervical swab, the medical professional will take this sample by inserting a speculum into the vagina, & taking the sample with a cotton swab. The procedure can be uncomfortable but should not be painful, & female doctors & nurses are always available on request.

FAQs

If you are infected with gonorrhoea, your symptoms are most likely to develop 2 to 10 days after infection, but it could take up to one month, & some cases will not show any symptoms at all. For women, symptoms can include thin or watery vaginal discharge that is green or yellow in colour, bleeding between periods or after sex, & abdominal pain or tenderness.

The gonorrhoea bacteria are found mainly in sexual fluids (vaginal fluids, penile discharge & semen), & so is most commonly transmitted through having unprotected oral, vaginal, or anal sex with an infected person. It can also be passed from a pregnant mother to her unborn child. It is not transmitted through kissing or hugging or sharing cutlery or towels. The best protection against gonorrhoea is practising safe sex with condoms.

If your gonorrhoea infection is showing symptoms, these should clear up within a few days of starting your antibiotic treatment, & be completely clear within two weeks.
