A healthy iron profile in your blood is crucial to your overall health. Iron is essential to blood production, & around 70% of the iron in your body is stored in haemoglobin (red blood cells).
A further 25% is stored as ferritin, in the cells. Women naturally store more than a third less iron than men do. When natural stores of iron are depleted, iron deficiency or anaemia can result.
If you require a blood test, simply book a convenient time and avoid having to wait at a blood test walk-in centre.
Your doctor may suggest that you get an iron profile if you are experiencing symptoms of iron deficiency or anaemia, which is usually caused by blood loss, either through the gastrointestinal tract or through prolonged heavy menstrual periods.
You may also wish to have the test independently if you are curious to know your iron profile as a check-up measure.
