It is caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum, & is mainly transmitted through sexual contact. You should get tested if you have had unprotected sex, or notice symptoms. The first symptoms are sores on the genitals, which are painless but highly infectious. These may also appear around the mouth, & can develop into a more general rash. In some cases, syphilis will show no symptoms.
