When should I get tested?

You should get tested if you have had unprotected sex, are noticing symptoms, or have a sexual partner who has a sexually transmitted infection. We offer individual testing for:

What the test includes

Your test will include a consultation with a doctor or nurse who will also take the required samples of blood, urine, or in some cases a cervical or penile swab. These will then be sent to a laboratory.

 

Procedure

Step 1
Preparing for test
Preparation for your test will depend on which test you are coming in to have, so please ask at reception when you make your appointment, who can advise you how best to proceed.
Step 2
During the test
Depending on your tests, you may give a small blood sample from your inner arm near the elbow, a urine sample, or a cervical or penile swab.
Step 3
Results
In keeping with our strict confidentiality policy, you will be able to choose exactly how you would like your results to be delivered. We can call you, email, or send a hard copy through the post. You can also come to the clinic to collect them in person.
 

FAQs

The symptoms of a first-time herpes outbreak are much more severe than later symptoms, & can last for up to three weeks. These include flu-like symptoms of feeling unwell, having aches & pains, & a low-grade fever; small blisters, either red or clear, on the genitals, anus, or surrounding skin, which develop into red, open sores. Blisters can also develop on the cervix, & may cause unusual vaginal discharge or dysuria (pain with urination).
 
Depending on how long you have had the virus & whether not you are experiencing an outbreak, treatment will vary. Antiviral tablets can be prescribed for first-time infections; different drugs can be taken as a mode of prevention, as well as lifestyle factors such as managing stress & ensuring you are well-rested.
 
There is no 100% certain way of preventing the spread of herpes simplex, as barrier contraceptive methods do not work. The safest way to avoid passing the virus to a partner is to avoid sexual contact during an outbreak of sores or blisters.
